MARINE TIMES NEWS February 10th:
Marine Institute celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The Marine Institute is proud to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11th February 2026.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a global observance led by the United Nations. It recognises the contribution of women and girls to science and technology and highlights the importance of full and equal access and participation in science and technology.

As Ireland’s scientific agency responsible for supporting the sustainable development of the State’s maritime area and resources, the Marine Institute delivers a wide-range of scientific research, technical services and evidence-based advice. Many of the Marine Institute’s female employees provide expertise in fisheries ecosystems, ocean climate research, marine environment and food safety, as well as in a variety of corporate roles.

With 277 employees, women represent more than half of the workforce, accounting for 55% of staff. The Marine Institute continues to foster a highly educated and skilled team, with 95% of female employees holding Bachelor, Master’s or Doctorate level qualifications.

The Marine Institute’s recruitment campaigns received strong interest in 2025: 53% of applicants were female, and 68% of positions were awarded to female candidates. This reflects the Marine Institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Through education and outreach initiatives, the Marine Institute encourages young people to consider a career in the marine and maritime sectors through a primary school engagement programme, an annual Transition Year programme, the long-running Bursary Programme, and partnerships with third-level institutions in Ireland and abroad.

Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute said, “As we mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the contribution of our female colleagues across the Marine Institute, who are talented, committed and passionate about the work we do. Their leadership and scientific expertise are essential to safeguarding Ireland’s marine resources for future generations.”

“Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion remains core to our corporate strategy, Ocean Knowledge that Informs and Inspires. The Marine Institute remains focused on implementing meaningful actions and long-term initiatives that promote equality of opportunity and an inclusive workplace for all.”

To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Marine Institute will profile some of its female staff, highlighting the work and impact of women across the organisation, as well as the diverse careers opportunities in Ireland’s marine sector.
